Few drivers can claim to have earned a six-figure paycheck in a single night at a dirt track, but Nick Hoffman has recently joined this select group.
Just one evening earlier, Tyler Erb became part of this elite club after local philanthropists Dan and Brenda Niss contributed a donation that elevated Friday’s winner's prize to an impressive $100,000. However, their generosity did not end there.
The Blaster 57 Special finale on Saturday for the World of Outlaws Late Model Series, presented by DIRTVision, was already set to be the season's largest purse, exceeding $240,000 in total, with $57,000 awarded to the winner and $5,700 just for starting the Feature. Midway through the event, track owner Matt Tifft announced that the Niss family had once again increased Saturday’s top prize to $100,057. It was at this moment that Hoffman saw an opportunity.
Nicknamed “The Thrill From Mooresville,” Hoffman faced challenges on Friday and was not a serious contender for the substantial prize. However, Saturday was a different scenario. Hoffman secured the Simpson Quick Time Award in Qualifying and won his Heat Race before the announcement of the increased prize. He secured a front-row starting position alongside Bilstein Pole Award winner Garrett Alberson but fell back to third at the start after Alberson surged ahead and fourth-starting Josh Rice maneuvered through the middle, overtaking Hoffman as they exited Turn 2.
Undeterred, Hoffman maintained his proximity to Rice early on, briefly taking the lead on Lap 4. Although Rice quickly regained the position, Hoffman seized another opportunity later in the race during a three-wide encounter with the lap car of Tristan Chamberlain, emerging victorious. At this juncture, Hoffman had the most significant win of his career within reach, with 20 laps remaining to secure it.
A caution with 11 laps to go positioned Hoffman directly behind Alberson, and he promptly capitalized on the situation. As Alberson opted for the high side of Turns 1 and 2, Hoffman took the low line. When Alberson hit a bump in Turn 2 and lost momentum, Hoffman seized the chance to take the lead and drive away to what became the most significant of his 17 World of Outlaws victories to date.
“It’s unreal,” Hoffman stated. “I first came here for the Dirt Million [in 2018], marking my initial starts in a Late Model, and that was eight years ago. I’ve experienced numerous challenges, worked with various car owners, all of whom have been exceptional. Without them, I wouldn’t be here. I’m at a loss for words. Thank you, Matt Tifft, for providing the additional prize money.
The track had character, and I used a slightly different tire combination compared to the rest of the field. I knew that towards the end of the race, it would favor me. I kept applying pressure and managed to surpass [Alberson].”
Alberson narrowly missed what would have been the most significant victory of his career, while Hudson O’Neal placed the No. 71 SSI Motorsports car in third. Erb followed up Friday’s triumph with a fourth-place finish on Saturday, ahead of Brandon Sheppard, who finished fifth.
